CONVENTIONAL SEARCH ENGINES
|
 |
www.altavista.com. This is my workhorse. I often use other sites as well but I always use this one.
www.excite.com. This site allows you to look for concepts as well as specific keywords. Can usefully broaden a query.
www.hotbot.com. This site is highly regarded. Uses analysis of its success in past searches to refine its techniques.
www.lycos.com. This site has a "top 5%" feature (optional) that searches for the best sites, not all the sites.
www.webcrawler.com. This site seems to be more of a directory site than a search engine.
www.nlsearch.com. This site is very highly rated. My impression is most favorable. Has an excellent on-line tutorial. This site would be my second choice.
www.snap.com. This site seems to be more of a directory site than a search engine.
www.alltheweb.com. This recently created site's goal is to re-index the web every couple of months. Ambitious.
www.google.com. Google uses a relevancy algorithm to try to identify the best single answer to your query.

MULTIPLE (META) SEARCH ENGINES
|
 |
www.metacrawler.com. This site sends your inquiry to about ten separate search engines and presents all of the results.
www.dogpile.com. This site sends your inquiry to about fifteen separate search engines and presents all of the results. I tend to use this one more than the others in this category. Must be the name.
www.mamma.com. This site sends your inquiry to about ten separate search engines and presents all of the results.
www.copernic.com. This site claims to provide access to 65 "information sources", there are purchasable upgrades available to expand capabilities. This looks interesting, and I plan to check it out further when time permits.
